4th Grade Syllabus
Dear Parents,
Welcome to 4th grade! I am so excited about this year and I am looking forward to getting to know you and especially your child this school year. Below are a few important reminders you will need to know about fourth grade.
Homework
PACA’s homework policy is ten minutes of homework for the average student, per grade level. That means your student will have approximately 40 minutes of homework nightly. This is an average and will vary for each student.
Classroom Rules
These are the class rules that each child is expected to obey. They are in place to help our classroom run smoothly and to maximize learning,
- I will show love to God and others.
- Be kind.
- Do the right thing at the right time.
- Work hard.
- Raise your hand to talk. NO BLURTS!
Discipline Plan
The foundation for a discipline plan to teach the value of good character and to show kindness towards others. We will speak often of Godly choices and praise positive attitudes and actions. If a student chooses to break a rule, these are the consequences:
Consequences could consist of any of the following.....
a. Verbal warning (not always)
b. Lose recess time
c. Write a behavior improvement plan (BIP)
d. Silent lunch
e. Lunch detention
f. Sent to principal's office
g. Phone call home / conference
h. Saturday school (parent fee)

Sign in the book 2nd time - miss 20 minutes of recess
Sign in the book 3rd time - miss entire recess PLUS write a BIP. (Parent must sign)
Subjects
Math: Fourth grade math uses, Saxon Math 5/4 curriculum, published by Saxon. The students will spend 40 minutes each day with teacher instruction and daily practice. The students will be evaluated through daily assignments, daily homework, timed quizzes and weekly tests. Weekly tests need to be corrected by the students for homework. If your child receives below a 70% on any test you will receive a Ren Web notification via email. Homework will be Monday ALL, Tuesday ALL, Wednesday evens and Thursday evens. No math HW will be assigned on the weekends unless they have makeup work or incomplete assignments.
Language Arts and Reading: The students will have approximately 90 minutes to be studying language arts, reading and writing. We will be using the Scott Foresman curriculum. Each week we will be reading a new story from our textbook and students will be evaluated on their comprehension of the story, along with a weekly spelling list and vocabulary words. All writing assignment will take place in class. If writing assignments are not completed during class time, they may become part of your child’s homework. The class will be evaluated through weekly tests, class work and homework.Typically reading tests will be on Thursdays (Reading HW on Wednesday nights) and spelling tests will be on Friday. (4 day weeks change this policy) Spelling homework: Monday - Word Sort, Tuesday - Tech Tuesday, Wednesday - Syllable Split, Thursday - Parent Quiz
Florida History: The curriculum being used for Florida History is Social Studies – Florida and is published by Scott Foresman. For half of the year, our class will spend approximately 40 minutes engaging in daily reading, comprehension checks and chapter review questions. Students will be evaluated through their daily workbook, chapter review questions, small projects and tests.
Science: For half of the year, our class will be learning science from our curriculum unit, Systems: Science Level Four, published by ACSI. We will spend 40 minutes a day with group reading, small experiments, group work and unit review sheets. Students will be evaluated through quizzes, unit review sheets, tests and projects.
Bible: For our Bible lessons, we will be using a curriculum titled God and His People, published by Bob Jones. Students will use a workbook and extra activities to explore God’s word and learn about His life. Each week the students will be quizzed on the weekly memory verse. Students are expected to practice writing their memory verse each night for HW.
Student Planner: Each day your student will write their homework in their student planner. The planner then needs to be signed by a parent each night. If homework was not completed, please do not sign the planner, but instead, write us a note explaining why homework was not completed, so we can work together in getting your student caught up on any missed homework. Please rely on your child’s planner for more current information.
Field Trips: Fourth Grade has 2 FANTASTIC field trips. In the fall, we go to Sea World to reinforce Science concepts. In the spring, we attend St. Augustine to experience Florida History. If you are interested in attending field trips, please fill out the Volunteer Information Form and return them to the front office ASAP.
